Calm Before the Storm – Robert Thurman

Robert Thurman

Inspired by the work of Mark Rothko, the piece might have just as easily been called “Green on Blue” or “Black on Dark Sienna on Purple.”  For me Rothko’s work has always possessed a great sense of foreboding and uneasiness with which I can identify.  Strong feelings of something approaching, whether it be dark clouds, depression, or an unnamable darkness, seem to saturate his work. This impending otherness I tried to convey musically through “Calm Before the Storm.”
